There are two types of sunscreen, physical and chemical. Currently, there are only two FDA- approved physical sunscreens, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. These ingredients provide SPF protection by laying on the surface of the skin and deflecting the sun’s damaging rays like a mirror. There are many FDA-approved chemical sunscreens, like avobenzone, oxybenzone and octinoxate. These ingredients absorb the sun’s rays. Some can also scatter the rays, protecting the skin from damage. You will find many products are a combination of physical and chemical ingredients.
